Patiala, 05 April (Sports Desk)

The inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic (NC Classic) 2025, a prestigious javelin throw competition, is slated to take place on May 24, 2025, at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana. Recognized by World Athletics as a Continental Tour ‘A’ category event, equivalent to a Gold-level competition, this one-day meet promises to bring top-tier javelin action to Indian soil for the first time.

Event Overview

The NC Classic is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour, a second-tier global series launched in 2020 as the successor to the World Challenge. Positioned just below the Diamond League, the Tour comprises four levels—Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Challenger—with the NC Classic earning its spot in the elite Gold category for ranking points. The event, headlined by India’s javelin icon and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, will feature top male and female javelin throwers from across the globe.

A Star-Studded Lineup

Former Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla revealed earlier that the invitational tournament aims to showcase the world’s top 10 javelin throwers in both men’s and women’s categories. This marks a historic moment for Indian athletics, as elite international competitors converge in Panchkula for this high-profile showdown.

Neeraj Chopra’s Vision

Organized in collaboration with Neeraj Chopra and JSW, the NC Classic aspires to become an annual highlight on the World Athletics calendar. Reflecting on the initiative, Neeraj shared, “It has been a longstanding dream of mine to organize and bring a world-class javelin competition to India. I am sure that my fellow athletes and the fans in India will create an experience that will be remembered for years. I’m excited to see how big we can make this.”

Neeraj, the reigning world champion, last competed in India at the National Federation Senior Athletics Competition in Bhubaneswar in 2024, where he threw 82.27m as part of his preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The NC Classic 2025 will also serve as a key qualification event for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled for September 13–21, 2025, although Neeraj has already secured his berth.

India’s Growing Athletics Presence

India’s athletics calendar is gaining global prominence. Recently, the country hosted the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi in March 2025, with the first-ever Para Athletics World Championships set for September-October 2025. Additionally, a Continental Tour Bronze-level meet, branded as the Indian Open, is scheduled for August 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, further enriching India’s 2025 athletics season.

Significance of the NC Classic

The Neeraj Chopra Classic not only celebrates India’s javelin superstar but also elevates the nation’s stature in global athletics. With its Gold-level status, the event offers athletes valuable ranking points and a platform to compete against the best, all while inspiring a new generation of Indian sports enthusiasts. As preparations ramp up, the NC Classic 2025 is poised to be a landmark moment in Indian sports history.
