Addressing the gathering, Water Resources Minister Barinder Goyal said that with the completion of this canal, approximately 4 lakh acres of land in 10 blocks of Patiala, Sangrur, Malerkotla, and Mansa districts will now receive 1617 cusecs of water, compared to the 900 cusecs they received earlier. He said that this work, which was estimated to cost ₹42 crore, has been completed by the honest government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for just ₹36 crore. He said that while previous governments used to take years to complete projects that could be done in days and inflated the costs manifold, the Punjab government led by S. Bhagwant Singh Mann has completed work that would have taken years in just over a month and saved ₹6 crore compared to the estimated cost, fulfilling the hopes of the people of the state.
During an informal interaction with reporters, Barinder Goyal, Minister of Water Resources, Mining and Geology, and Land and Water Conservation Departments, said that in several areas of the state where canal water has not been available for the last 40 years, the farmer-friendly government has provided water within a few months. He said that the Punjab government is strengthening the backbone of the state’s economy, which is agriculture.
He said that earlier we used to utilize about 68 percent of the water received from the dams, and 38 percent of the water was going to waste. In the last three years, our government has brought 84 percent of this water into use, and in the coming time, it will be made 100 percent. He said that using canal water raises the ground water level, so farmers should use canal water as much as possible because the crops grown with it are healthy and also save electricity consumption.
