CHANDIGARH, March 16:
In a resolute effort to reinforce law and order and deliver justice, the Punjab Police are preparing to transport seven prominent associates of Amritpal Singh, leader of the Waris Punjab De (WPD) group, back to Punjab from Dibrugarh Jail. These individuals will be officially arrested in connection with the Ajnala Police Station attack case to face legal accountability, announced Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Sunday.
The DGP identified the seven individuals as:
- Basant Singh from Daulatpura Ucha in Moga,
- Bhagwant Singh, also known as Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, from Bajeke village in Moga,
- Gurmeet Singh Gill, alias Gurmeet Bukkanwala, from Bukkanwala village in Moga,
- Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi, alias Daljeet Singh Kalsi, from West Punjabi Bagh in New Delhi,
- Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, alias Guri Aujla, from Phagwara,
- Harjeet Singh, alias Chacha, from Jallupur Khera village in Amritsar,
- Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, alias Kulwant Singh, from Rauke Kalan in Moga.
Currently, these individuals have been held under the National Security Act (NSA) at Dibrugarh Jail in Assam for the past two years.
DGP Yadav elaborated that a senior police team, under the command of Superintendent of Police (SP) Harinder Singh Gill, is stationed at Dibrugarh Jail to apprehend the seven detainees once their NSA detention concludes. The Punjab Police will then present them before a court in Dibrugarh to obtain transit remand, ensuring their prompt return to Punjab for trial proceedings.

The incident at the heart of this case occurred on February 23, 2023, when Amritpal Singh and his followers, positioned under Sri Palki Sahib with Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji present, launched an assault on the Ajnala Police Station. Their aim was to secure the release of their associate, Lovepreet Singh, alias Toofan. In response, the Amritsar Rural Police registered FIR no. 39 on February 24, 2023, under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault to deter public servant), 186 (obstructing public servant), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant), 333 (grievous hurt to public servant), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 427 (mischief causing damage), 148 (rioting with deadly weapon), and 149 (unlawful assembly), at the Ajnala Police Station.
Providing additional insights, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Border Range Satinder Singh, joined by SSP Amritsar Rural Maninder Singh, addressed a press conference. He revealed that, starting Monday, seven of the ten detainees will be brought back to Punjab to face trial in various cases registered throughout the state. “We will proceed with the formal arrest of these seven individuals under FIR no. 39/23 at Ajnala Police Station to initiate investigations without delay,” DIG Singh affirmed.
