Punjab Vigilance Busts ASI Bribery Racket – ₹15,000 Caught on Trap

In its ongoing crackdown on corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Janak Raj, in-charge of Police Post Kailash Chowk, Ludhiana, red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹15,000.

Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the state Vigilance Bureau said the accused was arrested based on a complaint lodged by a resident of Civil Lines, Ludhiana.

According to the complainant, his brother was arrested in a case where ASI Janak Raj was the investigating officer. The complainant alleged that when he went to the police station to meet his arrested brother, the accused ASI immediately took ₹10,000 as bribe on the spot to allow the meeting.

Furthermore, the ASI reportedly demanded ₹2 lakh in the name of the SHO and an additional ₹50,000 for himself to ensure that the complainant’s brother would not be remanded to further police custody. The entire conversation regarding the bribe demand was secretly recorded by the complainant.

Unwilling to pay any illegal gratification, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau Range, Ludhiana. After conducting a preliminary enquiry into the complaint, the VB team laid a successful trap. During the operation, ASI Janak Raj was caught red-handed accepting ₹15,000 bribe money from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

In this connection, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Ludhiana. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
