University Employees Donate One Day’s Salary to Flood Relief Fund

Patiala, September 8

The devastating floods across various parts of Punjab have caused significant damage to homes, farmland, crops, livestock, and livelihoods, with some tragic loss of life. In response, Punjabi University has expressed solidarity with affected families and is actively providing multifaceted support to alleviate their suffering.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jagdeep Singh emphasized the institution’s social responsibility, stating that organizations must explore all possible avenues to assist during such crises. He expressed satisfaction with the university’s various departments, which are working diligently within their capacities to contribute to relief efforts.

The university’s National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers, led by a large number of students, are actively involved in ground-level relief operations in flood-affected areas. Recognizing the potential mental health challenges arising from the trauma of this disaster, the university’s Psychology Department has deployed a team of experts to provide support. Individuals facing such issues can contact the university’s specialists for assistance.

Dr. Jagdeep Singh also appealed to university employees affected by the floods, either personally or through their relatives, to reach out to the relevant departments for any possible aid. He noted that the university is exploring additional ways to extend help within its capacity. Notably, university employees are contributing one day’s salary to the flood relief fund.

NSS Coordinator Dr. Anhad Singh Gill shared that the university’s NSS Department is running a campaign to collect relief materials. Help desks have been set up at the university’s Gol Market and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Hostel guest room to gather supplies, including tarpaulins, mosquito nets, medicines, mosquito repellents like Odomos, clothing, water bottles, and sanitary pads, which are being delivered to affected areas. NSS volunteers are also collecting materials directly from households, with three dedicated mobile numbers (76969-82404, 98726-78873, 78142-99224) provided for coordination. The campaign has received an overwhelming response. The NSS Department is also in constant contact with district authorities and other NGOs working on the ground. Dr. Gill personally visited the flood-affected village of Harchandpura to assess the situation.

Additionally, Punjabi University has revised the schedule for late admission fee deadlines for undergraduate and postgraduate courses (entry-level) at its affiliated and constituent colleges for the 2025-26 academic session, ensuring that no student is adversely affected by the floods.
