Breakthrough in Air Quality Monitoring

Punjabi University has achieved a significant milestone with the registration of a design patent from the Government of India for a Real-Time Air Quality Index (AQI) Detector. This innovative device, developed by PhD scholar Bachandeep Singh Bhathal from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was created under the supervision of Dr. Gaurav Gupta and Dr. Brahmaleen Sidhu, with contributions from Dr. Gurjit Singh Bhattal and Dr. Priyanka Gupta.

A Solution for Indoor Air Quality

Bachandeep Singh Bhathal explained that the patented device is a compact and user-friendly tool designed to monitor air quality in indoor environments such as classrooms, hospitals, offices, shopping malls, party halls, theatres, and homes. It provides instant measurements of air purity, addressing the growing concern of indoor air pollution in Punjab, which is exacerbated by dust, biomass smoke, and poor ventilation.

Dr. Gaurav Gupta highlighted the device’s key benefit: it enables immediate awareness of air quality, allowing users to take prompt actions like improving ventilation or using air purifiers. This innovation is timely, as indoor air pollution poses a significant public health risk, and the device could play a crucial role in reducing exposure to harmful pollutants.

Tailored for Indoor Use

Dr. Brahmaleen Sidhu emphasized that unlike traditional AQI systems, which focus on outdoor monitoring, this detector is specifically engineered for enclosed spaces. It continuously tracks and displays real-time air quality metrics, facilitating timely interventions. The device is portable, aesthetically designed to blend into indoor settings, and accessible for everyday use, making it a practical solution for diverse environments.
