Punjab’s ₹679.37 Crore Sugarcane Payment Mean, A Game Changer for Farmers

In a significant step to bolster the financial well-being of Punjab’s farmers, Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Thursday that the state government, which offered the highest sugarcane purchase rate in the country at ₹401 per quintal, has disbursed ₹679.37 crore in sugarcane payments for the 2024–25 crushing season.

In a press statement, Cheema revealed that this payment benefits 18,771 farmers across Punjab, corresponding to sugarcane supplied to the state’s nine cooperative sugar mills, which collectively crushed 194.66 lakh quintals during the season. “With a rate of ₹401 per quintal, the total dues owed to farmers amount to ₹779.86 crore. The remaining ₹100.49 crore will be cleared soon, pending central government assistance,” he stated.

The Finance Minister highlighted that over 87 percent of the payments have already been cleared. Payments for sugarcane supplied to the nine cooperative sugar mills have been settled up to the following dates: Ajnala (March 10), Batala (March 18), Bhogpur (March 27), Budhewal (March 13), Fazilka (March 1), Gurdaspur (March 25), Morinda (March 30), Nawanshahr (March 31), and Nakodar (February 22).

“The Punjab Government is fully committed to ensuring timely payments to our farmers,” said Cheema, adding, “By prioritizing liquidity and financial stability for sugarcane growers, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab Government is dedicated to building a robust agricultural economy and honoring the dignity of those who feed the nation.”
