Punjab’s Rural Sports: A Pathway to Olympic Glory

  • Punjab Government to build 13,000 modern sports grounds statewide

  • Over 3,000 grounds to be completed in the first phase, says Tarunpreet Singh Sond

Chandigarh, August 20

To enable Punjab’s budding athletes to excel at the Olympics and other global competitions, Chief Minister Bhagwant  Mann has launched an ambitious initiative to construct 13,000 state-of-the-art rural sports grounds across the state.

Punjab’s Rural Development and Panchayats Minister, Tarunpreet Singh Sond, shared that construction has already started on 3,073 sports grounds in villages as part of the project’s first phase.

Sond noted that previous administrations neglected sports infrastructure and youth development. In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party government is prioritizing sports promotion, aiming to foster a vibrant sporting culture in rural areas. These grounds will encourage young people to channel their energy positively, steering them away from drug abuse. Combined with the state’s anti-drug campaign, “Yudh Nashiyan Virudh,” Sond believes these facilities will help eradicate the drug menace by engaging youth in sports, igniting their passion, and protecting them from harmful addictions.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing world-class sports facilities and job opportunities for the youth. To ensure top-tier training, renowned athletes who have represented India internationally will be appointed as coaches, offering aspiring players global exposure. Sond affirmed that under Chief Minister Mann’s leadership, the government is dedicated to reviving Punjab’s sporting legacy.

Notably, Punjab is the first state in India to provide financial support to athletes before international competitions, an initiative already showing promising results. With the development of these rural sports grounds, Punjab is poised to achieve new heights on the national and international sports stage.

Sond expressed optimism that these efforts will empower Punjab’s youth to bring glory to the state across various fields.
