Rodrigues’ Maiden Century Propels India to Record ODI Total and Series Victory Over Ireland

Patiala, 13 January (Sports Desk)

Jemimah Rodrigues struck her maiden ODI century, guiding India to a resounding 116-run victory over Ireland in the second ODI in Rajkot. This win secures an unassailable 2-0 lead for India in the three-match ICC Women’s Championship series.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, India Women amassed 370/5, their highest-ever ODI total, surpassing their previous best of 358 against the same opposition in 2017.

Stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana (73) and Harleen Deol (89) also made significant contributions, setting the stage for India’s imposing total. Following Mandhana’s strong start, Deol and Rodrigues combined for a crucial 183-run partnership for the third wicket. While Deol fell just short of her century, Rodrigues reached her milestone in the final over with a boundary off Arlene Kelly.

Highest ODI Totals (India Women):

358/2Ireland2017
358/5West Indies2024
333/5England2022
325/3South Africa2024

Reflecting on her first ODI hundred, Rodrigues expressed relief, stating, “I am relieved. I am used to scoring hundreds in domestic, (but a lack of centuries in international cricket) was bothering me. Sometimes you get a lot of overs, sometimes you don’t. I had to get back to how I used to play in my U19s, because I have played a lot of T20s.”

Defending the formidable total, the Indian bowlers controlled the game. Deepti Sharma was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/37. Christina Coulter Reilly provided resistance for Ireland with a fighting 80 off 113 balls, but wickets fell consistently at the other end.

With this win, India moves to second place in the 10-team ICC Women’s Championship points table, four points behind Australia, who have already secured the title for the third consecutive time.
