Satwik-Chirag Storm into Malaysia Open Semifinals

Indian men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have advanced to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open 2025 badminton tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

The world No. 9 duo overcame a tough quarterfinal match against local favorites Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, winning 26-24, 21-15. In a tense first game, Chirag and Satwik saved four game points after initially leading 19-16. The Malaysian pair fought back to level the score at 19-19 and even took a 21-20 lead, but the Indians held their nerve to clinch the game.

The second game saw the Malaysian pair take a three-point lead at the mid-game interval. However, Chirag and Satwik quickly leveled the score at 11-11 and then established a 16-14 lead. They then won five of the next six points to secure their sixth career victory over Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi.

Prior to their quarterfinal win, Chirag-Satwik defeated Malaysian pair Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong in straight games in the round of 16, following a three-game victory over Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ming-che and Tang Kai-wei in their opening match.

In the semifinals of the BWF Super 1000 tournament, the seventh-seeded Chirag and Satwik will face the unseeded but strong South Korean duo of Kim Won-ho (Paris 2024 mixed doubles silver medalist) and Seo Seung-jae (reigning men’s and mixed doubles world champion).

Fellow Paris 2024 Olympians Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy were eliminated in earlier rounds of the Malaysia Open, which concludes on Sunday. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu did not participate in the tournament.
