Shakib Al Hasan: Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder banned by ECB for bowling in domestic competitions
Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan finds himself embroiled in controversy once again. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has banned him from bowling in competitions under its jurisdiction. This decision comes after a test conducted earlier this month at Loughborough University found his bowling action to be illegal.
Umpires Raised Concerns in September
In September, while representing Surrey in the County Championship, umpires raised concerns about Shakib’s bowling action. Notably, Shakib had taken an impressive 9 wickets in the match, which was his first appearance in county cricket since the 2010-11 season.
To lift the ban, Shakib must undergo further testing and demonstrate that his elbow extension remains within the permissible 15-degree limit during delivery. Only after clearing this test will he be allowed to bowl in domestic tournaments in England again.

A History of Controversies
Shakib has been no stranger to controversies in recent years. Following a political coup in Bangladesh, a murder case was reportedly filed against him. Additionally, he announced his retirement from T20 cricket and has not played an international match for Bangladesh since the Test series against India. Currently, Shakib resides in the USA with his family.
BCB President’s Statement
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed recently stated that Shakib remains part of their plans for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. “Playing for Bangladesh while living abroad is undoubtedly a challenge for Shakib. However, he continues to be a key part of our strategy for the Champions Trophy scheduled for February and March next year,” he remarked.
Shakib’s road back to competitive cricket remains uncertain as he faces challenges both on and off the field.
