Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed Sanath Jayasuriya as the interim head coach of the men’s national team. Jayasuriya will assume this role immediately and continue until the end of the upcoming tour of England.
The Sri Lankan team is set to travel to England for a three-match Test series, beginning on August 21. The first Test will be held in Manchester, followed by the remaining two matches in London at Lord’s and The Oval.

Jayasuriya replaces Chris Silverwood, who resigned after Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The team finished third in Group D, securing only one win out of four games. During the T20 World Cup 2024, Jayasuriya was part of Sri Lanka’s contingent as a Cricket Consultant.
Before the T20 World Cup, Silverwood had a tenure marked by notable successes, including a T20 Asia Cup victory in 2022, a runner-up finish in the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023, and several wins in bilateral series.
Jayasuriya brings a wealth of experience to the coaching role. Throughout his illustrious career, he played in 586 matches for Sri Lanka across all formats, scoring an impressive 21,032 runs and taking 440 wickets. Renowned as one of the most dangerous opening batsmen of his era, Jayasuriya has also served as a selector for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and currently holds the position of full-time Cricket Consultant.

Speaking on the appointment, Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, said: “Sanath, with his wealth of international cricketing experience, is well-positioned to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution.”
