Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership, Punjab has seen a significant rise in admissions to Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state. This increase is a direct result of the government’s focus on providing vocational training to young people and implementing positive changes in the technical education sector.

Key improvements include:
- Increased Capacity: To meet industry demands, a 25% increase in seats in government ITIs this year will result in 52,000 additional seats by 2025. In the current 2024-25 session, 93.04% of seats in the 137 government ITIs have been filled.
- Industry-Relevant Training: The Dual System of Training (DST) has been introduced in government ITIs in partnership with industry to ensure training is relevant to current job market needs.
- New Courses: Following consultations with industry representatives, the Technical Education and Training department launched 27 new industry-oriented courses in the 2022-23 academic session, including Agro Processing, Baker and Confectioner, Electroplater, Solar Technician, and Textile Wet Processing Technician.
- Upgraded Infrastructure: Five government ITIs in Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Sunam, and Manakpur Sharif have been upgraded under the MPLAD scheme. An MOU with Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (HBCH&RC) will provide internship opportunities for polytechnic and ITI students.
- Industry Investment: The department has successfully attracted industry investment to further strengthen and upgrade ITIs. 23 government ITIs have been upgraded under the World Bank-assisted STRIVE project, with ₹12.72 crore invested in acquiring the latest machinery for workshops.
- New ITI Establishments: 25 new government ITIs have been established in the state. In the 2023-24 financial year, ₹15 crore was spent on civil works and ₹1 crore on machinery. A further ₹15 crore has been allocated by the Finance Department for the 2024-25 financial year.
