
Forest & Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak Releases Cubs into Semi-Open Enclosure; Inaugurates Renovated Veterinary Hospital and Other Projects
Chandigarh, February 19:
In a heartwarming step towards wildlife conservation, the Forests and Wildlife Preservation Minister, Mr. Lal Chand Kataruchak , today released two adorable tiger cubs, ‘Abhay’ and ‘Aryan,’ into the semi-open enclosure (Kraal) at Chhatbir Zoo . The cubs, born on Diwali night (October 31, 2024) at midnight, are the offspring of the white tigress Gauri and the yellow tiger Arjun . Both cubs are healthy and thriving under the care of zoo authorities. After receiving one more vaccine dose, they will be moved to the main enclosure for public viewing.
The release marks a significant milestone in the zoo’s efforts to ensure the proper upkeep and welfare of wildlife in the state. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Kataruchak emphasized the department’s commitment to fostering love and care for wild animals through various initiatives.

Inauguration of Key Projects
During his visit, the Minister also inaugurated several key projects aimed at enhancing the zoo’s infrastructure and animal care facilities. These include:
- A newly renovated veterinary hospital , equipped with modern amenities.
- Offices for the Senior Veterinary Officer and Veterinary Officer , along with dedicated rooms for veterinary staff.
- Two state-of-the-art laboratories (Lab 1 and Lab 2 ) for research and diagnostics.
- A dispensary , research room , pantry , and two washrooms to support daily operations.
Additionally, the Minister inaugurated:
- A service circulation path for staff and feed-fodder vehicles, ensuring uninterrupted supply of food and fodder to animal enclosures.
- An 800-meter-long, 4-meter-wide visitor pathway constructed outside the animal enclosures for public convenience.
- Two night shelters for watchmen on duty and a new logo of the Punjab Zoos Development Society (PZDS) .
Ongoing Developments
Minister Kataruchak also inspected ongoing projects at the zoo, including:
- A parking stand for wildlife safari buses .
- A visitor shelter near the lion safari canteen .
- A new crocodile enclosure .
- A parking stand for battery-operated vehicles .
- A feeding platform for young deer in the deer safari area.
These developments reflect the state government’s dedication to improving visitor experience while prioritizing the safety and well-being of animals.
Promoting Empathy and Awareness
Chhatbir Zoo is not just a hub for wildlife conservation but also a center for generating awareness and empathy towards animals. The zoo regularly organizes activities such as:
- Blood donation camps .
- Run for Wild races.
- Zoo education programs targeting children, youth, and other sections of society.
Through these initiatives, the zoo aims to sensitize people about the importance of protecting wildlife and fostering a culture of compassion towards animals.
