India kicked off its campaign at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2025 in spectacular fashion, securing multiple medals on the opening day at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The highlight of the day was a historic podium sweep in the men’s discus throw F11 event, with Indian athletes claiming all three medals.
Indian Athletes Shine on Day 1
- Men’s Discus Throw F11:
- Sagar clinched the gold medal with a best throw of 34.84m.
- Balaji Rajendran secured silver with a throw of 26.98m.
- Janak Singh Harsana won bronze with a 25.13m effort.
- Women’s 100m Sprint (T35, T36, T38, T44):
- Preethi Pal, a two-time Paralympic bronze medallist, added a silver medal to her tally, finishing in 14.85 seconds.
- Men’s 100m Sprint (T11/T12):
- Vishu claimed silver, while Pragadeeshwara Raja Moorthy took home bronze.
- Men’s 100m Sprint (T13):
- Meet Hareshkumar Tadhani secured bronze with a time of 11.63 seconds.
- Men’s 100m Sprint (T35):
- Abhishek Babasaheb Jadhav won silver with a time of 13.76 seconds, while Vinay claimed bronze in 14.47 seconds.
- Men’s 100m Sprint (T44):
- Mit Bharatbha Patel sprinted to gold with a time of 12.67 seconds, and Ababil Ali secured silver in 13.81 seconds.
- Men’s High Jump T42:
- Ramsingbhai Gobindbhai Padhiyar won gold uncontested as he was the sole participant in the event.
- Men’s Javelin Throw F33/F34:
- Devershee Sachan claimed silver with a throw of 11.34m.
A Strong Start for India
With nearly 150 Indian para-athletes competing across 90 medal events, the host nation is poised for a strong showing at the Grand Prix, which concludes on March 13. The event, now in its 12th season, is part of a global series of competitions featuring the world’s top para-athletes, akin to the Diamond League in able-bodied athletics.
