Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Harmeet Singh Kalka has lauded the World Punjabi Organisation’s (WPO) proposal to collaborate on improving Guru Harkishan Singh Public Schools and other educational institutions managed by the DSGMC in the national capital. Kalka invited WPO, led by Rajya Sabha Member Vikramjit Singh Sahney, to submit a formal proposal to the Gurdwara Committee to uplift these institutions.

Context and Commitment

The DSGMC oversees 12 schools and other educational institutions, which have been grappling with challenges in recent years. Addressing a facilitation program organized by WPO to honor the newly elected DSGMC team, Kalka emphasized the collective responsibility to restore the prestige of these institutions. “These schools were once the pride of the Sikh community in Delhi. We are ready to partner with the World Punjabi Organisation to bring them back to their former glory,” he stated.

Kalka highlighted that since assuming office in 2022, his team has prioritized transparent fund utilization, which has strengthened the financial health of the DSGMC and its institutions. “We will accept any proposal aimed at saving and elevating our schools,” he announced, underscoring the committee’s openness to collaborative efforts.

Support from Delhi Government

Kalka noted that the Delhi government, represented by Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and supported by former Rajya Sabha member S. Tarlochan Singh, who were present at the event, is committed to supporting the revival of these schools. “It pains me to see our schools, once among the best in New Delhi, facing a crisis. We are determined to restore their legacy, and the Delhi government’s support presents a valuable opportunity,” he added.

Plans for Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th Martyrdom Anniversary

During the meeting, Sikh leaders discussed plans to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji in November 2025. Kalka outlined a series of events, including:

  • Nagar Kirtans: Devotional processions to honor the Guru’s legacy.
  • Dharam Parchar Programs: Initiatives to spread Sikh teachings.
  • Sarab Dharma Sammelan: Inter-faith gatherings to promote unity.
  • Inter-Faith Debates: Discussions to foster mutual understanding.

The DSGMC plans to involve the Delhi state government in these commemoration activities to ensure widespread participation and impact.

New Educational Initiative

Kalka also announced that the DSGMC is actively planning to establish a Law College, with preparations already underway to expand its educational offerings and contribute to the community’s academic growth.

Response to Shiromani Akali Dal’s Election Boycott

Commenting on the Shiromani Akali Dal’s decision to boycott the recent DSGMC office-bearer elections, Kalka clarified that it was not a boycott but a reflection of their limited influence, with only 10-12 members in the 51-member general house. “Their absence does not deter our commitment to serve the community,” he asserted.

Attendees and Significance

The facilitation program saw the presence of prominent figures, including S. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Tarlochan Singh, highlighting the unity of Sikh leadership in addressing community challenges. The collaboration with WPO signals a proactive step toward revitalizing DSGMC-run schools, ensuring they reclaim their status as premier educational institutions in Delhi.
