250 Building Projects Worth Rs 2000 Crore Underway in Punjab: Harbhajan Singh

Health, Education, and Judicial Infrastructures See Major Advancements with Strategic Funding and Planning

Chandigarh, February 21

Punjab’s Public Works Department (PWD) is currently executing nearly 250 building projects worth approximately Rs 2000 crore across 15 client departments, announced Harbhajan Singh ETO , Minister for Public Works, on Thursday. These projects, funded by respective departments and implemented by the PWD, underscore the department’s commitment to enhancing and upgrading Punjab’s infrastructure landscape.

Focus on Health Infrastructure

Highlighting the emphasis on healthcare, Harbhajan Singh ETO stated that the PWD is prioritizing the development of health infrastructure across the state. Key initiatives include:

  • Construction of 18 Child Care Blocks (CCBs) worth Rs 264 crore , with several already underway.
  • Development of 18 Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHL) , out of which 4 are already under construction .
  • Establishment of 420 Aam Admi Clinics across Punjab, aimed at providing accessible and affordable healthcare to all citizens.

Looking ahead, the PWD will undertake works worth Rs 3000 crore in the fiscal year 2025-26 for the construction of Medical Colleges in Malerkotla, Sangrur, SAS Nagar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, SBS Nagar, and Moga . This initiative aims to bolster Punjab’s public health diagnostics and ensure quality healthcare facilities for its citizens.

Advancements in Education Infrastructure

Underlining the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government’s focus on education, the PWD Minister highlighted significant progress in the education sector. The department is working on 56 Schools of Eminence , with:

  • 19 schools currently under construction .
  • 10 schools already completed .

These institutions aim to provide world-class educational infrastructure to children from all sections of society, ensuring equitable access to quality education across Punjab.

Boost to Judicial Infrastructure

The judicial infrastructure in Punjab has also received a substantial boost, with administrative approvals amounting to Rs 250 crore granted in the current fiscal year (2024-25 ). Key projects include:

  • Development of Judicial Court Complexes (JCC) in Khanna, Patran, and Fazilka , featuring modern amenities such as courtrooms, residential accommodations, and computer rooms to manage the growing caseload.
  • Repair and maintenance of existing judicial complexes under the head 2059 , ensuring that current facilities remain functional and well-maintained.

“The PWD is committed to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure to support the judiciary’s expanding needs,” said the Minister.

Upkeep of Government Buildings and Quarters

In addition to new projects, the PWD is dedicated to maintaining existing infrastructure. In FY 2024-25 , Rs 40 crore has been allocated for the repair and upkeep of government buildings, including quarters and judicial complexes. This ensures that these facilities remain functional and safe for public use.

Architectural Wing’s Role in Innovation

The PWD Minister also praised the department’s Architectural Wing for its role in designing and executing numerous monuments, memorials, and public buildings across the state. The wing provides specialized services such as:

  • Designing green buildings and sustainable structures.
  • Landscaping for various government departments.
  • Ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities (divyangjan ) through ramps, lifts, escalators, and other inclusive features.

“Special attention is given to creating barrier-free environments for all citizens, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity,” added Harbhajan Singh ETO.

Through these initiatives, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is striving to create robust infrastructure in key sectors like health, education, and judiciary. By combining strategic planning, dedicated funding, and innovative design, the PWD is playing a pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for Punjab and its citizens.
