-Punjab Outshines Kerala, Delhi, Maharashtra & Himachal Pradesh

Punjab has achieved a historic milestone in the field of school education by emerging as the top-performing state in India under the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 for States/UTs 2024-25, released by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Adding another feather to its cap, this achievement comes just weeks after the NITI Aayog Education Quality Report 2026 recognized Punjab among the best-performing states in the country.
Sharing the achievement, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said that Punjab has secured the prestigious Prachesta-1 Grade with a score ranging between 51% and 60%, a distinction shared only with Union Territory Chandigarh. Punjab outperformed states such as Kerala, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Himachal Pradesh, all of which were placed in the Prachesta-2 category.
The minister explained that the PGI 2.0 evaluates states and union territories across six major domains, including:
- Learning Outcomes & Quality
- Access
- Infrastructure & Facilities
- Equity
- Governance Process
- Teacher Education & Training
Punjab particularly excelled in the most significant category, Learning Outcomes & Quality, where it secured the top position nationwide with an impressive score of 150.4. This domain measures students’ performance in Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science for Classes 3, 6, and 9, making it a key indicator of educational excellence.
In the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) 2024-25, Barnala emerged as the highest-performing district in Punjab with a score of 461, earning the prestigious Uttam-2 Grade. Other top-performing districts included Sri Muktsar Sahib, SBS Nagar, Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, Tarn Taran, and Malerkotla.

The PGI-D framework assesses districts on six critical parameters, including classroom interactions, infrastructure, student entitlements, school safety, digital learning, and governance systems.
Congratulating teachers and education staff for the achievement, Minister Harjot Singh Bains stated that this success belongs to Punjab’s dedicated educators whose efforts transformed the vision of “Sikhya Kranti” into reality. He said the state’s emphasis on conceptual learning over rote memorization is now producing visible results across classrooms.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab has moved beyond traditional systems and established a new benchmark in government school education. The minister added that Punjab is not merely constructing schools, but building a future-ready generation and a stronger Punjab for tomorrow
