₹1,969.50 Crore Required for Restoration of Roads and Bridges

Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO today revealed that the recent catastrophic floods have inflicted severe damage on 4,658 kilometers of roads and 68 bridges across the state.
Presiding over a review meeting with departmental officials to assess the losses, the Cabinet Minister detailed the extent of the destruction. Under Plan Roads, 19 bridges and 1,592.76 kilometers of roads have been damaged, along with 4,014.11 meters of R-walls and B-walls and 92 culverts. On National Highways, 4 bridges and 49.69 kilometers of roads have been affected, in addition to 2,559.5 meters of R-walls and B-walls and 14 culverts. Under Link Roads, 45 bridges and 2,357.84 kilometers of roads have suffered damage, accompanied by 3,282 meters of R-walls and B-walls and 376 culverts. Furthermore, 657.54 kilometers of roads constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana have also been impacted.
The Minister stated that an estimated ₹1,969.50 crore will be needed for the repair and restoration of the damaged bridges, roads, R-walls, B-walls, and culverts.

During the meeting, Harbhajan Singh directed officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately improve the condition of various roads in Punjab and expedite stalled projects. He expressed concern over recurring accidents due to delays in repairing service roads adjacent to under-construction flyovers at Mallian, Tangra, and Daburji on the Amritsar-Jandiala section, instructing officials to complete the work without further delay. He also directed NHAI officers to resolve persistent traffic congestion under the Kharar Flyover.
The Cabinet Minister informed that discussions also covered the app-based survey being conducted by the Punjab Government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, to assess flood-related damages in nearly 2,800 villages.
Prominent attendees at the meeting included Special Secretary PWD (B&R) Hargun Jeet Kaur, Chief Engineer Gagandeep Singh, Chief Engineer Vijay Kumar Chopra, Chief Engineer Ramtesh Bains, Chief Engineer Anil Gupta, NHAI Regional Officer Rakesh Kumar, and Project Director Aseem Bansal.
