The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has intensified its crackdown on corruption, arresting Varinder Goyal, a Reader to the President of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Tarn Taran, while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.
A VB spokesperson revealed that Goyal was apprehended following a complaint by a resident of Deo village, Tarn Taran district. The complainant stated that her husband, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), died in an accident in 2022. The Punjab Police Department approved a compensation of Rs 30,00,000, which was sent to HDFC Bank for disbursement. However, the bank refused payment on trivial grounds, prompting her to file a case in the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Tarn Taran.

The spokesperson further disclosed that Goyal demanded 10 percent of the compensation (Rs 3,00,000) as a bribe to ensure a favorable judgment. Following a preliminary investigation, the VB set up a trap and caught Goyal red-handed accepting the first installment of Rs 50,000 in the presence of two official witnesses. A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Amritsar Range. Goyal is scheduled to be produced before a competent court tomorrow, and further investigations are ongoing.
