AAP Government’s Proactive Measures Position Punjab as a Leader in Tax Mobilization

Punjab’s Finance, Planning, Excise, and Taxation Minister, Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, announced on Friday that the state has achieved another milestone in tax revenue growth, recording a remarkable 32.08% increase in GST collections for July 2025 compared to July 2024. This achievement continues Punjab’s consistent trend of record-breaking tax revenue growth, both year-on-year and month-on-month, for the past three and a half years.

Key Highlights

In a press communiqué, Minister Cheema reported that July 2025’s net GST revenue reached ₹2357.78 crore, a significant rise of ₹572.71 crore from ₹1785.07 crore in July 2024. For the fiscal year up to July 2025, Punjab’s net GST revenue stands at ₹9188.18 crore, reflecting an increase of ₹2025.36 crore over the ₹7162.82 crore collected during the same period in FY 2024-25.

Driving Factors

Cheema credited this stellar performance to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab Government’s effective policies, which have created a business-friendly environment and boosted tax compliance. The Taxation Department’s robust enforcement measures have been pivotal in curbing tax evasion while supporting honest taxpayers.

Enforcement Success

The State Investigation and Preventive Unit (SIPU) recovered ₹156.40 crore in penalties during the first quarter of FY 2025-26, comprising:

  • ₹57.43 crore from road checks

  • ₹98.97 crore from inspections and verifications

Additionally, SIPU uncovered two major GST fraud cases involving ₹2620.80 crore in fake transactions, with an estimated tax evasion of ₹296.32 crore. Two FIRs were registered in June 2025 to address these scams, highlighting the department’s intensified enforcement efforts.

Leadership in Tax Mobilization

Minister Cheema emphasized that Punjab’s proactive measures have positioned it among the top performers in tax mobilization in India, consistently surpassing the national GST growth average. Despite numerous challenges, the state’s fiscal policies and initiatives have driven this success.

Commitment to Transparency

Cheema reaffirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to a transparent, efficient, and equitable tax system that fosters economic growth while ensuring fair contributions from all stakeholders. He stated, “With robust fiscal management, Punjab is set for further financial milestones, paving the way for a prosperous and progressive future.”
