In a major move to strengthen healthcare and education in Punjab, Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Cheema announced today that the Finance Department (FD) has formally approved the Medical Education and Research Department’s proposal to raise the retirement age for doctors and dental faculty under the Punjab Dental Education (Group-A) Service Rules, 2016, from 62 to 65 years.
In a press release issued here, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema explained that this key decision will extend the retirement age of the Dental Teaching Faculty to 65, aligning it with the existing policy for Medical Teaching Faculty at Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Amritsar and Patiala. He stressed that the move aims to utilize the expertise and experience of this skilled faculty for a longer period, thereby improving the overall efficiency and quality of the Medical Education and Research Department.

Finance Minister Cheema noted that this decision will benefit 113 professionals, including 112 dental teaching faculty members and one Joint Director, by extending their service period. He added, “By retaining this experienced faculty, the Punjab government seeks to tap into their knowledge and skills to continually uplift the state’s dental healthcare system, benefiting both students and patients who depend on these institutions.”
Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government is resolute in providing top-quality education and healthcare services to its citizens. He highlighted that this step reflects the government’s proactive efforts to bolster healthcare infrastructure and maintain high standards in medical and dental education.
