Virsa Sambhal Gatka Cup Showcases Punjab’s Rich Martial Heritage

The Gatka Association of Punjab, in collaboration with Gatka Association District Faridkot, celebrated the annual World Gatka Day by organizing the prestigious “Virsa Sambhal Gatka Cup” at the Old Grain Market, Faridkot. The event showcased the rich heritage of Sikh martial arts and witnessed enthusiastic participation from Gatka players across Punjab.

Providing details about the event, Talwinder Singh Ferozepur, General Secretary of the Gatka Association of Punjab, and Dr. Manjit Singh Dhillon, State Vice President and President of Gatka Association District Faridkot, stated that four boys’ teams and one girls’ team participated in the competition. The tournament was organized with the support of Jathedar Baba Binod Singh Gatka Akhara, Faridkot, and Sardar Gursewak Singh Bhana Lajeez, and attracted several distinguished guests and sports enthusiasts from the region.

Sharing the competition results, Narender Pal Singh Paras, Vice President of Gatka Association District Faridkot and National Gatka Coach, informed that in the Sikh martial arts demonstration category, Pratham Sahai Gatka Akhara, Ludhiana secured the championship title. Jathedar Baba Binod Singh Gatka Akhara, Faridkot finished as runners-up, while Akal Purakh Ki Fauj Gatka Akhara, Kotkapura claimed the third position.

The event also featured an individual Gatka Soti Competition, where Kashmir Singh (Kotkapura) emerged as the winner. Sahibpreet Singh (Ludhiana) secured second place, while Navkaran Singh (Faridkot) finished third. The top performers were honoured with trophies and awards by the chief guests and dignitaries present at the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, organizers emphasized that World Gatka Day serves as an important platform to preserve and promote Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art, among the younger generation while encouraging physical fitness, discipline, and cultural awareness.

Prominent personalities present at the event included Jathedar Baba Satnam Singh Sodhi, Baba Satnam Singh Kar Sewa Wale (Jand Sahib Sadiq), Sardar Achhar Singh, Hardeep Singh, National Gatka Coach Sherry Singh Bhamri (Fatehgarh Sahib), Pradeep Singh (Ludhiana), Akashdeep Singh, and Shahzad Kaur (Faridkot).
