Chandigarh, July 22
Continuing its crackdown on corruption across the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Satnam Singh, a Senior Assistant posted in the Excise Department, Jalandhar, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹5,000.
According to an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a resident of Village Nagra, Tehsil Phillaur, District Jalandhar.
The complainant, who operates a restaurant, had applied online for an L-5B licence (Retail Vend of Draught Beer/Wine) for his establishment. After the application was processed, the Collector-cum-Deputy Commissioner (Excise), Jalandhar Zone, directed the concerned officials to obtain the necessary reports and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for the proposed licence.
During the verification process, the accused Senior Assistant allegedly demanded ₹5,000 from the complainant to process the licence application. The complainant recorded the conversation in which the bribe was demanded.

Refusing to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau, Jalandhar Range. Acting on the complaint, the VB team laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the ₹5,000 bribe in the presence of two official witnesses. The tainted currency notes were recovered from his possession.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Jalandhar. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
