A Cry for Justice: “Pukkar” Echoes the Pain of Rape Victims

Patiala, November 11:

The 5th day of the National Theatre Festival, organized by Kala Kriti Patiala and SDBCT in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Center Patiala, witnessed a powerful performance by the Aakanksha Sansthan theater group from Jodhpur. Their play, “Pukkar,” delved into the sensitive issue of sexual assault and the subsequent trauma faced by victims.

Directed by Dr. Vikas Kapoor and written by Dr. Nibedita Jena, “Pukkar” tells the story of Uma Kaur, a rape survivor who tragically took her own life after enduring years of harassment and societal stigma. The play follows a researcher who investigates Uma’s case and, through a haunting encounter with her spirit, uncovers the devastating impact of sexual violence.

The play’s powerful narrative highlights the societal indifference and lack of support for victims of sexual assault. The haunting chorus in the play serves as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to address this issue.

The technical aspects of the play, including the lighting design by Mohammad Shafi and the sound design by Rounak and Rajkumar, further enhanced the overall impact of the performance.

“Pukkar” is a poignant reminder of the urgent need for societal change and the importance of providing support to survivors of sexual assault.
