In a landmark push to modernize Punjab’s urban infrastructure, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government unveiled a ₹140 crore project to redesign 42 kilometers of key streets in Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced the initiative, emphasizing its goal to bring Punjab’s cities on par with global standards while criticizing previous SAD-BJP and Congress regimes for “stunting urban growth due to political shortsightedness.”
Project Highlights
- Comprehensive Redesign: Roads will be widened, drainage systems upgraded, and traffic bottlenecks addressed.
- Accessible Footpaths: Resilient, dust-proof pathways with landscaping to enhance aesthetics and accessibility.
- Utility Realignment: Streetlights, bus stands, and water lines to be repositioned for functionality and visual appeal.
- Decade-Long Maintenance: Contractors mandated to maintain roads for 10 years post-construction.

- Construction (8 months): Agencies to adhere to global standards for implementation.
- Maintenance (10 years): Regular mechanized cleaning and upkeep by contractors.

- Majitha Road (3 km), Court Road (1 km), Shubham Road (7 km), GT Road (0.5 km).
Ludhiana (12.4 km):
- Old GT Road (6.5 km), Chaura Bazaar (1.7 km), Ghumar Mandi Road (4.2 km).
Jalandhar (12.3 km):
- HMV Road (3.4 km), Nakodar-Jalandhar Road (3.2 km), Pathankot Road (2.3 km).

Cheema lambasted previous governments for “failing Punjab’s cities despite world-class talent,” asserting that AAP’s project will set a national benchmark. “While others prioritized political gains, we’re transforming how Punjabis experience urban life,” he said.
