Mumbai/Patiala, 22 March (Sports Desk)

Reigning Asian Games champion Annu Rani made a dazzling return to competition, clinching the gold medal in the women’s javelin throw at the Indian Open Throws Competition 2025 in Navi Mumbai. With a throw of 58.82m on her fourth attempt, she not only claimed victory but also soared past the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) qualifying standard of 58.00m for the Asian Athletics Championships 2025. This marked her first competitive outing since winning gold at the National Open Athletics Championships in August 2024, further solidifying her legacy as India’s record holder with a personal best of 63.82m set in 2022.

In the men’s javelin throw, Rohit Yadav seized the spotlight with a gold-medal-winning throw of 78.87m, surpassing the AFI’s entry standard of 78.00m for the Asian Championships. He outdistanced Shivpal Singh (77.00m) and Shashank Patil (76.66m), who took silver and bronze but fell short of the qualifying mark. For context, the national record remains Neeraj Chopra’s 89.94m, achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.

The competition, held on March 21, 2025, also showcased talent across other throwing disciplines:

  • Women’s Discus: Seema threw an impressive 56.39m to win gold and exceed the Asian Championships qualifying standard.
  • Women’s Shot Put: Shiksha led with 16.18m, followed by Kachnar Chaudhary (15.01m) and Vanshika Shekhawat (14.02m).
  • Men’s Hammer Throw: Damneet Singh took gold with 65.69m, while Harshita Sehrawat won the women’s event with 59.08m.

While these standout performances met the AFI’s qualification benchmarks, the final team selection for the Asian Championships, set to take place in Gumi, Republic of Korea, in May 2025, rests with the AFI’s discretion. The Indian Open Throws Competition 2025 proved to be a thrilling showcase of India’s throwing talent, with Annu Rani and Rohit Yadav leading the charge toward continental glory.
