Army Personnel and Accomplice Arrested for Leaking Sensitive Military Data to Pakistan’s ISI

Chandigarh/Amritsar, June 22, 2025

In a significant counter-espionage operation, Amritsar Rural Police, under the directive of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to enhance Punjab’s security, apprehended an Indian Army personnel and his associate for alleged espionage activities linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), announced Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Sunday.

The arrested individuals are Gurpreet Singh, also known as Gopy Foji, a resident of Dhariwal, Amritsar, currently serving in the Indian Army and posted in Jammu, and his accomplice Sahil Masih, alias Shali, also from Dhariwal.

DGP Gaurav Yadav revealed that preliminary investigations indicate Gurpreet Singh was in direct contact with ISI operatives, specifically a handler identified as Rana Javed, and is suspected of transmitting sensitive military information via pen drives. Two mobile phones with virtual numbers, allegedly used for communication with ISI operatives, were seized from the accused. Ongoing investigations aim to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all involved collaborators.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Maninder Singh provided further details, stating that Gurpreet Singh, recruited into the Army in 2016, exploited his position to systematically collect, store, and share classified military data using pen drives and discs. The espionage network was facilitated by Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago. Since then, Gurpreet has been actively relaying sensitive military information to the ISI through pre-arranged drop locations.

SSP Maninder Singh noted that Gurpreet received monetary compensation through a sophisticated financial network involving intermediary bank accounts of friends, relatives, and foreign associates to avoid detection. The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation as Gurpreet and Sahil Masih attempted another transfer of sensitive data.

Further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the espionage network and identify additional conspirators, both within India and abroad.

A First Information Report (FIR No. 140, dated June 21, 2025) has been registered under sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Lopoke Police Station in Amritsar Rural.
