Manipuri weightlifter Bindyarani Devi shone at the National Games 2025, capturing the gold medal in the women’s 55kg category and setting a new national record in the snatch.

Devi, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, displayed remarkable composure after an initial setback in the snatch. She successfully lifted 88kg in her final attempt, surpassing the previous national record of 86kg held by Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu.

Her dominance continued in the clean and jerk, where she lifted 107kg in her first attempt and then 113kg in her final attempt after a missed attempt at 112kg. Her total lift of 201kg was just shy of her own national record of 202kg. Nevertheless, it was enough to secure the gold medal. Devi now holds all three national records (snatch, clean and jerk, and total) in the women’s 55kg weightlifting category.

“I was well prepared, and I am happy with my performance. It is always nice to get a record in your name. It’s good that now both snatch and clean & jerk records are in my name,” said Bindyarani.

Fellow Manipuri lifter L Nilam Devi won the bronze medal. After struggling in the snatch, she recovered to lift 81kg. She then successfully lifted 98kg and 101kg in the clean and jerk. Sharabani Das took home the silver medal.

The National Games 2025, which began on January 28, will continue until February 14.
