Bumrah Out, Rana In: India’s Updated Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Patiala, 12 February (Sports Desk)

India has suffered a significant setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ruled out due to a lower back injury. The BCCI confirmed the news on Tuesday.

Bumrah has been struggling with his fitness since the fifth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney last month, where he was unable to bowl after experiencing back spasms. He subsequently missed England’s white-ball tour of India.

Bumrah’s absence is a blow to India, as he has been a key component of their bowling attack across all formats. In ODIs, he has taken 149 wickets in 89 matches at an average of 23.55 and an economy rate of 4.59. This is the second time Bumrah has missed a major ICC event due to a back injury, having also been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Harshit Rana has been named as Bumrah’s replacement in the Champions Trophy squad. In addition, spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been included in the squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The deadline for final squad submissions was February 11.

Chakravarthy, 33, has a strong record in white-ball cricket, with 33 wickets in 18 T20Is for India. His recent form earned him his ODI debut against England in Cuttack.

Rana, 23, has played only two ODIs but made a notable impact on debut, taking three wickets against England in Nagpur earlier this month as a concussion substitute.

India’s Champions Trophy campaign begins against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a highly anticipated match against Pakistan on February 23. Their final Group A game is against New Zealand on March 2.
