Sri Lanka’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu, has once again claimed the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for July 2024. This marks her second win this year, following her previous triumph in May.
The southpaw outshone stiff competition from India’s batting sensations, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, to secure the prestigious honor. Athapaththu’s exceptional leadership and batting prowess were instrumental in Sri Lanka’s historic Women’s Asia Cup 2024 victory over seven-time champions India.
With this win, Athapaththu joins an elite group of players with multiple Player of the Month awards, sharing the second spot with West Indies’ Hayley Matthews (three awards). Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner holds the record with four wins.
