India has made history by winning the gold medal in the open section of the 2024 Chess Olympiad for the first time. This remarkable achievement was secured on Sunday in Budapest, Hungary.

China, who were in second place going into the final round, faced the United States and suffered a loss. Meanwhile, in India’s match against Slovenia, Arjun Erigaisi defeated Jan Subelj, and D. Gukesh defeated Vladimir Fedoseev. Arjun’s victory meant India needed only one more point to clinch the gold, which Gukesh promptly secured.

Indian Team Dominates from the Start The Indian team showcased exceptional performance throughout the tournament. They started with an impressive streak of eight consecutive wins. Although their winning run was momentarily halted by the defending champions Uzbekistan, India bounced back by defeating the top-seeded United States in the next round, solidifying their position at the top. This victory marked a significant improvement over India’s bronze medal finish at the 2022 Olympiad on home soil. India had previously won bronze in the 2014 edition as well.
