CM Urges Punjab to Unite Against Environmental Crisis

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann marked India’s Independence Day with a call to action, urging the state to unite in combating environmental pollution. Addressing a crowd at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium after unfurling the national flag, Mann emphasized the critical need to protect Punjab’s natural resources for future generations.

Drawing inspiration from the rich history of Punjab, Mann highlighted the state’s pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. He paid tribute to iconic martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh, and Lala Lajpat Rai, whose sacrifices paved the way for independence. While acknowledging Punjab’s post-independence contributions, particularly in agriculture through the Green Revolution, Mann also emphasized the environmental costs incurred by the state.

Citing the Sikh Gurus’ teachings on the sanctity of nature, Mann stressed the urgent need to address pollution. He outlined the government’s efforts in various sectors:

  • Dr*g Menace: Mann reaffirmed the state’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs, highlighting the arrest of over 14,000 dr*g peddlers and the seizure of assets worth Rs. 173 crore.
  • Water Management: The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s focus on improving canal water distribution, increasing its utilization from 21% to 72%. He announced progress on the Malwa Canal project, aiming to irrigate nearly two lakh acres of land.
  • Healthcare: Mann praised the success of Aam Aadmi Clinics, which have provided healthcare to over 2 crore people.
  • Education: The Punjab Sikhya Kranti initiative aims to transform government schools, with plans to establish 118 Schools of Eminence.
  • Infrastructure: Mann announced the renaming of Mohali International Airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh and the upcoming naming of Halwara Airport after Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha.
  • Sports and Welfare: The third edition of ‘Kheda Watan Punjab Dian’ sports tournament will commence on August 28. The government has also provided 44,667 jobs through a transparent recruitment process.
