Chief Minister Calls for Stronger Civil-Military Coordination to Tackle Security Challenges and Emergencies

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday emphasized the need for stronger civil-military coordination in Punjab during a meeting with Western Command Army Commander Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation on border management, internal security, disaster response, and operational preparedness in the strategically important border state.

The meeting, held in Chandigarh, also focused on speeding up ongoing projects in border areas and developing a coordinated strategy to address emerging security and humanitarian challenges.

This was the first meeting between the Chief Minister and Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh after he assumed command of the Western Army Command. Detailed discussions were held on several matters of national importance, with both sides agreeing to prioritize the completion of all ongoing border-area projects to strengthen operational capabilities and national security infrastructure.

Highlighting Punjab’s strategic importance, Mann said that Punjab shares nearly 550 kilometers of international border, making stronger civil-military synergy extremely crucial for the region. He stressed the need to build greater trust and coordination through effective policymaking and stronger internal security mechanisms.

The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive and effective strategy to deal with natural disasters, external threats, and other emergency situations. He stated that close cooperation between the civil administration and the armed forces is essential for protecting national interests and ensuring quick response during crises.

During the meeting, extensive discussions were also held on border management, internal security, youth empowerment, rehabilitation of Agniveers, and land acquisition matters linked to operational preparedness. Other key issues discussed included disaster management, recruitment in the Armed Forces, and welfare initiatives such as housing projects for serving Army personnel and veterans.

Reaffirming the Punjab Government’s commitment to supporting the armed forces, Mann assured Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh of the state government’s full cooperation in every initiative undertaken by the Indian Army in the service of the nation.

Among those present during the meeting were Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, Brigadier Sameer Thakkar, VSM, Colonel Jasdeep Sandhu, Advisor Civil Military Affairs at Western Command Headquarters, along with several senior officials.
