Kapurthala, December 15
Congress MLA from Kapurthala, Rana Gurjeet Singh, has urged that elections for the Panjab University Senate in Chandigarh be conducted without any further delay. He emphasized that the senate’s term ended on October 31, 2023, and there is no valid reason to postpone the election process.

Highlighting the importance of the senate, Rana Gurjeet Singh stated that it serves as the university’s governing council and the highest decision-making body, comprising a diverse membership of academicians, administrators, university graduates, and elected representatives, including those from state legislative assemblies.

“The election process usually begins six months in advance, in March. However, this year, there have been no visible preparations,” said the Kapurthala legislator, pointing out the unusual delay. The 91-member senate includes 35 nominated members, while the remaining members are elected.

The MLA further added that the senate oversees all university affairs, including academic decisions, budget approvals, and property management. “For the first time, elections are delayed due to the chancellor’s office not approving the schedule,” he noted, expressing concern over this unprecedented situation.

Rana Gurjeet Singh also referred to a recent statement made by the Union Minister of State for Education in Parliament. The minister clarified that Panjab University, established by the 1947 Act, is an autonomous body, and its senate elections are conducted after receiving approval from the chancellor. However, the MLA questioned the prolonged delay, asking when the elections would finally take place.

The MLA also voiced his apprehensions about the Government of India’s intentions, suggesting that efforts might be underway to convert the state university into a central university. “This university represents Punjab’s culture, tradition, history, and ethos. It must remain true to its origins and character,” he stated firmly.

Panjab University, established in 1882, has a rich legacy and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future. Rana Gurjeet Singh highlighted its historical significance and its role in producing eminent personalities who hold influential positions in public, private, bureaucratic, and political spheres.

“Why are we making students suffer?” asked the MLA, referencing ongoing protests by students over the delay, which has created uncertainty. He appealed for an end to the indecision and urged the authorities to respect the university’s legacy by conducting the elections at the earliest.
