Jalandhar/Patiala, 24 December

In the recently held Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) Elections 2024, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) became the largest party, winning 39 out of 85 wards. Nevertheless, the party did not achieve the majority threshold of 43 seats needed to claim the Mayor’s position.

In a notable political turn, Congress councillor Manmeet Kaur from Ward 47 joined AAP on Monday, just after the election results were announced on Saturday. Her departure from Congress has raised AAP’s total to 42 seats, leaving them only one seat away from the majority necessary for the Jalandhar Mayor to be from AAP.

This news comes in the wake of two additional councillors joining AAP on Sunday evening. Seema Badhan, an independent councillor from Ward 81, and Parveen Wasan, a Congress councillor from Ward 65, also signed on with AAP, boosting the party’s numbers from 39 to 41 prior to Manmeet Kaur’s switch.

Local Body Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and Jalandhar MLA Mohinder Bhagat were on hand during Manmeet Kaur’s joining ceremony. This swift growth in membership enhances AAP’s standing and improves its prospects of obtaining the Mayor’s position in Jalandhar.
