A three-day capacity-building program for members of District Consumer Commissions from Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh has commenced. The program focuses on enhancing participants’ administrative and judicial understanding of consumer protection laws and contemporary issues. It features interactive sessions and discussions led by experts, fostering intellectual exchange among members of National, State, and District Consumer Commissions.
The inaugural session was attended by prominent legal figures, including Justice A.P. Sahi (President of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission), Justice Daya Chaudhary (President of the Punjab State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission), and Justice Raj Shekhar Attri (President, Chandigarh State Dispute Redressal Commission).

Professor Jai Shankar Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, welcomed the guests and highlighted the program’s significance. He discussed the importance of the United Nations guidelines for consumer protection in relation to the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
Justice A.P. Sahi emphasized the crucial role of consumer commissions at all levels in ensuring justice for consumers. He praised the Ministry of Consumer Affairs for sponsoring the program and acknowledged the comprehensive scope of consumer forums, stating that they address issues “from the birth of a man to his death and even beyond.” He highlighted the interplay between the Consumer Protection Act and the Competition Act and addressed the contemporary challenge of digital arrest and the responsibilities of banks in cases of unfair trade practices.
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ivneet Walia, Registrar (I/C) and Associate Professor of Law at the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law.
The event, which runs from March 1st to 3rd, 2025, will include ten interactive sessions covering various aspects of consumer protection laws.
