Dr. Jagdeep Singh officially assumed the role of Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University on May 21, 2025, receiving a warm welcome from university officials, teaching and non-teaching staff unions, and various stakeholders. The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the institution, with Dr. Singh expressing his gratitude and commitment to its growth.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Singh shared his vision for Punjabi University, reflecting on his personal connection to the institution where he pursued his higher education. “I am deeply honored to serve the university that shaped my academic journey. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to contribute to its continued growth,” he stated.
A cornerstone of Dr. Singh’s agenda is aligning the university’s curriculum with industry demands. He emphasized, “Educational institutions must adapt their courses to meet the evolving needs of the industry, ensuring students gain practical, workforce-ready skills.” To achieve this, he proposed integrating industry experts into the Board of Studies to strengthen curriculum development. This collaboration aims to create a syllabus that not only meets academic standards but also enhances graduate employability. Additionally, Dr. Singh suggested introducing short-term certificate courses tailored to industry requirements.

Celebrating Punjabi University’s Legacy
Dr. Singh commended the university’s significant contributions to higher education, particularly in the Malwa region of Punjab. He highlighted its unparalleled dedication to promoting Punjabi language, literature, and culture. “Punjabi University has made remarkable strides in advancing education in the region. Moving forward, we will take steps that align with the changing times and the evolving needs of society and the economy,” he affirmed.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Singh extended his gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, and the Punjab Cabinet for entrusting him with this prestigious role. He pledged to lead the university with a focus on innovation, inclusivity, and societal impact.

The ceremony was attended by key university officials, including Dean of Academic Affairs Prof. Narinder Kaur Multani, Registrar Prof. Sanjeev Puri, and Dean of College Development Council Dr. Balraj Singh Saini. Several senior officials, along with current and retired faculty members from Dr. Singh’s teaching department, also joined to celebrate the occasion.
Dr. Jagdeep Singh’s Distinguished Career
Dr. Singh brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to Punjabi University. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Registrar of the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) Mohali. His extensive career in Punjab’s higher education sector includes roles such as Director (o), Additional Director, Deputy Director, and Chief Vigilance Officer in the Department of Higher Education, Government of Punjab. He also held the position of Registrar at the Central University of Punjab for four years, where he made significant contributions as Controller of Examinations and Finance Officer.
Dr. Singh played a pivotal role in establishing IISER Mohali as its project coordinator, appointed by the Government of Punjab. He has also served as an advisor in Biotechnology at Pushpa Gujral Science City, leading projects like the Biotech Gallery, Evolution Gallery, Dinosaurs Park, AIDS Gallery, and the Red Ribbon Project. A trained NAAC assessor, Dr. Singh holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with post-doctoral training in Molecular Biology. His research focuses on DNA methylation in cancer and the epigenetics of aging, with over 20 published papers on systematics and cancer epigenetics. His recent book, Science and Spirituality: The Journey Within, explores the intersection of science and spirituality.
