The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) dedicated the Guru Harkrishan Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Gurdwara Bala Sahib to the public today, following an ‘Ardas’ ceremony.
DSGMC President Harmeet Singh Kalka, addressing the gathering, announced that the hospital will operate as an ultra-modern, multi-utility facility but will charge patients at rates equivalent to government hospitals, with free OPD services. He highlighted that since 2019, when Manjinder Singh Sirsa became DSGMC President and he took over as General Secretary, efforts were initiated to establish the hospital. A free dialysis center was opened, providing 90,000 dialysis sessions without charging a single penny. “We don’t even have a billing counter in the hospital,” Kalka stated.
He noted that previous administrations had created obstacles in starting the hospital, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, a dedicated wing was set up, and various treatment departments were established for people of all communities. The hospital now boasts departments like nephrology, urology, gynecology, pediatrics, two intensive care units (ICUs), a pediatric ICU, advanced CT scan and ultrasound facilities, and specialist consultants. Kalka expressed gratitude to Kar Sewa Waley Baba —Baba Bachan Singh, Baba Satnam Singh and Baba Surinder Singh for their support, reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to world-class services at government rates. He also mentioned leveraging Sirsa’s position in the government to secure benefits like the Ayushman Bharat scheme for the hospital.

Delhi’s Minister of Food and Supplies, Industry, Forest, and Environment, Sirsa, shared his emotional connection to the hospital, calling it a service to humanity. He credited the current government, of which he is a part, for granting all necessary permissions to make the hospital’s opening possible. Sirsa also acknowledged former DSGMC President Avtar Singh Hit for allocating land for the hospital. He urged the Sikh community in Delhi to unite for the collective good, even encouraging his political rivals to collaborate for community welfare outside of election periods.

Sirsa revealed that the hospital, closed since 2006, was reopened after 19 years with the support of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who played a key role. Although the CM was scheduled to attend the dedication ceremony, she couldn’t due to a meeting with PM Narendra Modi following a plane crash in Ahmedabad yesterday. Sirsa also proposed establishing a law college in Delhi to encourage Sikh youth to study law and praised Ranjit Kaur’s efforts in opening a Ramgarhia Bank, predicting it would earn her widespread appreciation.
DSGMC General Secretary Jagdip Singh Kahlon and other members were also present at the event.
