ECI Disqualifies 6 Candidates from Contesting Elections for 3 Years: Sibin C

Chandigarh, 5 August

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has disqualified six candidates who contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sibin C, revealed that these candidates failed to submit their election expenses to the commission within the stipulated timeframe, as required under Section 78 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. As a result, they are ineligible to contest elections for the next three years under Section 10A of the same act.

The six disqualified candidates are from the Gurdaspur district. Sucha Singh, who contested from the Batala assembly seat, was among those disqualified by an ECI order issued on July 15, 2024. Similarly, Prem Singh and Hardip Singh, who contested from the Qadian assembly seat, have also been disqualified.

Additionally, candidates Sunny, Karandeep Singh, and Gurpreet Singh from the Gurdaspur assembly seat have been declared ineligible to contest elections for the next three years.
