The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) intensified its crackdown on corruption by apprehending Harjit Singh, a Junior Engineer (JE) in the Education Department posted in Kapurthala, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000.
Case Details
According to a VB spokesperson, the arrest followed a complaint from a school teacher at Government School, Dhaliwal Dona, Kapurthala. The complainant alleged that Harjit Singh demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 to issue a completion certificate for a Rs 40 lakh grant utilized by the school. The accused had already received Rs 2,000 as an initial installment and was pressing for the remaining amount. The teacher recorded a conversation in which the JE demanded the bribe and submitted it to the VB as evidence.
VB Operation
After verifying the complaint, the VB conducted a sting operation. A team caught Harjit Singh red-handed accepting Rs 4,000 as the second installment of the bribe in the presence of two official witnesses. A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar Range.
