Gojira Wins Grammy for Historic Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony Performance

French metal band Gojira has won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their groundbreaking appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony. The award, received on February 2nd, celebrates their memorable performance alongside opera singer Marina Viotti.
Guitarist and vocalist Joe Duplantier expressed his joy, calling it a “very, very special moment” and highlighting the team effort involved in the Olympic ceremony performance. The Grammy win was the perfect culmination of the experience.
Gojira made history as the first metal band to ever perform at an Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. Their powerful, riff-driven rendition of the revolutionary song “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” with Viotti and 300 classical musicians on July 26th became an instant highlight of the event.

The band members performed from the historic Conciergerie, adding a dramatic backdrop to the performance. The ceremony also featured a symbolic appearance of Marie-Antoinette, and Viotti’s arrival on a wooden ship, accompanied by pyrotechnics, created a truly captivating spectacle on the banks of the Seine.
A 90-minute documentary, “La Grande Seine – The Full Story,” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, including Gojira’s performance and never-before-seen footage of Celine Dion’s rehearsal.
