Patiala, April 26

India’s growing obesity crisis has placed it as the third most obese nation globally, following the United States and China, according to a study published in the renowned journal The Lancet. Dr. Amit Garg, Senior Associate Director of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Park Hospital, revealed that approximately 30 million adults in India are either overweight or obese.

Dr. Vimal Vibhakar, Senior Consultant General Surgery and Medical Director at Park Hospital, Mohali, debunked the common myth that obesity is a disease exclusive to the wealthy. “Obesity is not just caused by overeating but also by adopting poor dietary habits. It affects both the rich and the poor equally,” he said. Reducing body weight by even 5-10% can significantly lower the risk of obesity-related diseases. However, in some cases, surgery remains the most effective solution to combat severe obesity.

Park Hospitals, the largest super-specialty hospital network in North India, boasts 19 hospitals, 3,500 beds, 800 ICU beds, 14 cath labs, 45 modular operation theaters, and over 1,000 doctors.

Elaborating on surgical interventions, Dr. Garg explained that bariatric surgery enables obese patients to lose 60-70% of their excess weight within a year. For patients undergoing diabetes or metabolic surgery within five years of diabetes onset, there is a 90-95% chance of complete remission from Type 2 diabetes.

Ashish Chaddha, Group CEO (North) of Park Hospitals, highlighted that the hospital network is empaneled with ECHS, CGHS, ESI, Haryana Government, Himachal Government, and all major TPAs and corporates.
