India Set for Historic Showing at WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025 with 19 Players in Main Draw

)India is poised to make history at the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025, fielding a record 19 players in the main draw, thanks to a series of wildcard entries. National champions Manush Shah and Diya Chitale are among the Indian table tennis stars awarded wildcards, ensuring a formidable home presence at the tournament, set to take place from March 25 to 31 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

In a bittersweet moment, table tennis legend Sharath Kamal, who will retire from international competition after this event, has secured a wildcard for the men’s doubles alongside partner Snehit Suravajjula. Already qualified for the men’s singles main draw, Sharath will bid an emotional farewell to the sport on home soil.

Wildcard Allocations Across Categories

The wildcard allocations extend across multiple categories, amplifying India’s representation:

  • Men’s Doubles:
    • Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai have also earned a spot.
    • Sharath Kamal and Snehit Suravajjula, as mentioned, secured the other wildcard.
  • Mixed Doubles:
    • Sathiyan will team up with Sreeja Akula.
    • The dynamic duo of Manika Batra and Manav Thakkar have also been granted a wildcard.
  • Women’s Singles:
    The event will showcase an all-Indian quartet of wildcard recipients:
    • Seasoned campaigners Sutirtha Mukherjee and Krittwika Sinha Roy,
    • Alongside Swastika Ghosh and national champion Diya Chitale.
  • Men’s Singles:
    • Snehit Suravajjula joins Manush Shah as the second Indian wildcard entry.
    • Adding international flair, Park Ganghyeon from the Republic of Korea—a 2023 Asian Games men’s team silver medalist—and Kim Taehyun from Malta have also secured main draw spots through wildcards.

    • Syndrela Das will team up with Suhana Saini.
