India vs New Zealand 1st Test Day 3: India are 231 runs, three batsmen dismissed

Bengaluru/Patiala, 18 October (Sports Desk)

The first Test match between India and New Zealand is underway at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After a rain-washed out first day, India had a disastrous second day, being bowled out for a paltry 46. New Zealand capitalized on this and built a substantial lead of over 130 runs.

On the third day, New Zealand continued their dominance with a strong batting performance. Contributions from Rachin Ravindra’s century and half-centuries from Tim Southee and Devon Conway propelled the team to a formidable total of 402, giving them a massive lead of 356 runs. In response, India managed to reach 231/3 in 49 overs. Virat Kohli was the last wicket to fall.

India started their second innings on a positive note with a 72-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, both were dismissed in quick succession. Rohit scored 52 off 63 balls while Yashasvi made 35 off 52. Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan then steadied the innings with a century partnership. Kohli departed for 70 off 102 balls, but Sarfaraz remained unbeaten on 70 off 78 balls at the end of the day’s play.

Key points:

  • New Zealand’s strong batting performance on the third day set up a challenging target for India.
  • India’s top order provided a solid start, but middle-order batsmen Kohli and Sarfaraz stabilized the innings.
  • India still faces a significant deficit heading into the final two days of the match.
