Jomel Warrican Named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for January 2025

Patiala, 11 February (Sports Desk)

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has been awarded the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for January 2025.

Warrican’s exceptional performances against Pakistan, including career-best figures and a key role in West Indies’ historic Test victory, earned him the accolade.

“It’s an honour to win this award,” Warrican said. “One of my goals for this year was my first five-for in Test cricket, but I did not think that it would be this grand! I see this as one small step in my cricketing career, and I look forward to many more. I promised my captain something special in this series, especially when my father, my biggest supporter, predicted a phenomenal performance for me. Multan has a special place in my heart: not only because of the historic win for the West Indies, beating Pakistan away from home, but also by earning this prestigious award.”

Warrican’s skillful spin bowling troubled the Pakistani batsmen on their home turf. In the first Test in Multan, he achieved career-best figures of 10/101 and contributed an unbeaten 31* with the bat. Despite his efforts, Pakistan won the match.

Warrican bounced back strongly in the second Test at the same venue. His crucial 36 runs at No. 11 helped West Indies recover from a difficult position. He then took four wickets in the first innings to give his team a slight edge. Promoted up the order in the second innings, he scored 18 runs. However, it was his bowling in the final innings that sealed the victory. His 5/27 wickets led to a Pakistani collapse, giving West Indies a 120-run win.

Overall, Warrican scored 85 runs at an average of 42.50 (the highest for West Indies in the series) and took 19 wickets at an outstanding average of 9. His performances also earned him the Player of the Series award.

This is Warrican’s first ICC Player of the Month award, and only the third for a West Indies player. Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie received the award in 2024.
