Kapurthala, August 11: MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh has expressed deep concern over the potential cancellation of eight highway projects in Punjab, as threatened by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The MLA attributed the issue to inadequate compensation provided to farmers whose land was acquired for these projects.
Singh urged both the central and state governments to address the matter with urgency and sensitivity. He emphasized that the problem lies in the insufficient compensation offered to farmers, which has led to unrest in the region.

The MLA called for the swift resolution of pending arbitration cases related to land acquisition, citing the delay in these cases as a major hindrance to the project’s progress. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, 2013, to ensure fair treatment for affected farmers.
Singh stressed that the timely completion of these highway projects, spanning 293 kilometers and estimated at Rs. 14288 crore, is crucial for the state’s development.
