Krishan Bahadur Pathak to replace PR Sreejesh as India’s goalkeeper for the Asian Champions Trophy

PR Sreejesh’s retirement, Krishan Bahadur Pathak has been named the primary goalkeeper for the 18-member Indian hockey team, captained by Harmanpreet Singh, for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy. Besides India, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan, and the host nation China will be participating in the tournament, which will be held from September 8 to 17.
Pathak, who was India’s standby goalkeeper at the Paris Olympics, will now be the main goalkeeper, while Suraj Karkera will be the reserve goalkeeper.
Experienced midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad has been named vice-captain. Regular vice-captains Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Shamsher Singh, and Gurjant Singh have been rested.
This will also be a golden opportunity for India’s emerging drag-flicker Jugraj Singh Junior, who has showcased his talent in the Pro League. Araijeet Singh Hundal will be the third drag-flicker in the team.
The defense will be handled by Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Harmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay, and Sumit. The midfield will consist of Rajkumar Pal, Neelakanta Sharma, Manpreet Singh, and Mohammad Raheel. The forward line will feature Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Araijeet Singh Hundal, junior team captain Uttam Singh, and Gurjoth Singh.

Ten members of the Paris Olympics bronze medal-winning team are in this squad. Coach Craig Fulton, in a statement released by Hockey India, said, “This is an important tournament for us. The team has returned to camp after celebrating the bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics.”
He added, “The last few weeks have been fantastic with the team receiving immense love. We hope this support continues. The Asian Champions Trophy marks the start of a new Olympic cycle, and we are ready for the challenge.”
The Indian team will play their first match against China on September 8. They will then play Japan (September 9), Malaysia (September 11), Korea (September 12), and Pakistan (September 14). The semifinals will be played on September 16 and the final on September 17.
