Life Saved Without a Single Penny: ₹4 Lakh Critical Heart Surgery Done Cashless Under Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna

“Every life matters. The Sehat Card ensures no citizen is denied timely, quality treatment due to lack of funds” — Health Minister Dr. Balbir

Chandigarh, March 26

In a powerful example of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna’s impact, a critical ₹4 lakh life-saving heart surgery was successfully performed completely cashless at PGIMER Chandigarh, marking one of the highest individual claims processed under the scheme till date.

The beneficiary, 37-year-old Sukhpal Kaur, a resident of Chandigarh, was diagnosed with a life-threatening aortic dissection — a serious cardio-thoracic and vascular condition that required immediate surgical intervention. The total cost of the surgery, hospitalisation, and specialised care was estimated at nearly ₹4 lakh, an amount that would have been extremely difficult for the family to arrange on short notice.

Thanks to the Sehat Card, the entire treatment was provided cashless under the scheme’s coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per family, allowing doctors to proceed without any delay.

A family member said, “The situation was very serious. The doctors told us immediate surgery was necessary. We could never have arranged such a huge amount so quickly. The Sehat Card saved us from immense stress and ensured treatment started without any delay.”

Dr. Sachin Mahajan of PGIMER Chandigarh explained, “Aortic dissection is a critical condition where even a short delay can be fatal. Once the Sehat Card was verified, we were able to proceed with the surgery immediately without waiting for financial clearances. This is the real benefit of the scheme in high-risk cardiac cases.”

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said, “Saving a precious life in such a critical situation brings great satisfaction. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna is ensuring that no family has to face the trauma of arranging huge medical expenses during emergencies.”

The scheme has already benefited lakhs of families across Punjab, with several high-value treatments being successfully delivered. The Punjab Government continues to urge residents to get their Sehat Card made at the earliest to avail cashless treatment up to ₹10 lakh per family.
