Major Setback for BJP in Handiaya: District President and Veteran Councillor Gurmeet Singh Joins AAP

Barnala, December 11
In a significant political development ahead of the municipal council elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a major blow in Handiaya. Gurmeet Singh, a two-time councillor and former district president of the BJP, along with several prominent leaders, has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Gurmeet Singh, who has been a key figure in Handiaya’s political landscape, served as a councillor for the municipal council twice and held the position of BJP’s Barnala district president for three terms. Joining him in the switch to AAP are BJP state executive member Harinder Singh Sidhu and BJP leaders Charanpreet Singh and Buta Singh. Their induction is expected to bolster AAP’s presence in the region.
The leaders were formally welcomed into AAP by Punjab State President Aman Arora at the party’s Chandigarh office. Harinder Singh Dhaliwal, AAP’s candidate in the Barnala Assembly by-election, was also present during the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Aman Arora launched a scathing critique of the BJP, asserting that the party is set to face a complete rout in the upcoming municipal elections in Punjab. “The Aam Aadmi Party has become the first choice for urban voters in Punjab,” Arora stated. “People are highly impressed with the AAP government’s performance over the past two and a half years, and they are now eager to entrust municipal governance to us as well.”
This development highlights AAP’s growing influence in Punjab’s urban political landscape and signals a shift in the region’s political dynamics ahead of the elections.
